Introducing Amino Desktop Bioengineering for Everyone One of the most mindblowingly awesome people Ive met in my six years at MIT is my friend Julie Legault. Julie is an artist, designer, and biohacker from Montreal. Before she came to MIT, she built wearable costumes for Rihanna and Imogen Heap, developed smart materials for Aston Martin, and taught at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. In June, Julie finished her masters degree at the Media Lab in the Playful Systems group with a thesis titled Amino: a domestic system for synthetic biology and continuous culturing. Here is the abstract from her thesis: With the ability to transfer a trait from one creature to another purposefully, synthetic biology is advancing across unforeseen domains. From algae cells that convert carbon dioxide to fuel, biocementation bacteria to terraform mars, and lab-grown meat, synthetic biology offers new materials for designers, technologists, and artists to explore, and yet, public opinion lags behind these scientific advancements. Anytime science advances faster than our ability to apprehend it, it produces progress but also fear, suspicion and uncertainty. Amino an object that allows direct interaction with microorganisms to experiment with biology as material sets out not simply to educate but to also be part of the early culture that metabolizes the changes underway. Amino is a design driven mini-lab that allows users to carry out a bacterial transformation and enables the subsequent care and feeding of the cells that are grown. Inspired by Tamagotchis, the genetic transformation of an organisms DN A is performed by the user through guided interactions, resulting in their synthetic organism for which they can care like you would a pet. Amino is developed using low cost ways of carrying out lab-like procedures in the home and is packaged in a suitcase-sized continuous bioreactor for cells. Basically, Julie, who AFAIK had no background in the sciences before coming to the Media Lab, taught herself enough synthetic biology to create a small, easy-to-use bioengineering kit that lets anyone create and take care of living cells. And now, with the help of the E14 Fund a Media Lab program that offers recent alumni a six-month-runway of funding and advising post-graduation shes founded a company, Amino Labs, to bring Amino to the general public. Heres what Julie told me about Amino: Ive always wanted to make my own little world and I think bioengineering cells allows me to do just that I get to create organisms with fun properties and take care of their little ecosystem by feeding, warming, balancing and playing with them. Thats one reason why I built Amino to make myself a biological tamagotchi. [The Amino is] a counter-top sized biolab that enables anyone to grow living cells to create new and interesting things like fragrances, flavours, materials, medicine, and more. Bioengineering is going to drive the next century in the same way electrical engineering shaped the last. It is important for everyone to the opportunity to experience the technology, hands on. The chocolate meditation also brings the same benefits of meditation as other forms but is perhaps easier to commit to, because it has a built-in reward above and beyond the general rewards of meditation: chocolate. Finally, if youre already a fan of chocolate and trying to cut down on how much chocolate you eat, you can use this as a form of mindful eating, to help yourself eat less and stress less next time you find yourself enjoying some of your favorite ?chocolatey desserts. Whatever your motivations, the chocolate meditation is a great one to learn.  Heres how to do it.? How to Meditate With Chocolate Get a small piece of chocolate. Thats right; for the chocolate meditation, you need, of course, a piece of chocolate. We recommend a small piece of dark chocolate with a large cocoa content, but you can use a chocolate kiss, a handful of semi-sweet chips, or whatever you have on-hand. It need not be a large piece of chocolate, either; in fact, bite-sized or a little larger is best.Relax your body.  Take a few deep breaths and work on un-tensing your muscles to relax your body. You want to start your chocolate meditation as physically relaxed as possible. Close your eyes, if you feel comfortable with it.Smell, gaze, and nibble.  After you smell the chocolate and enjoy the aroma, after you look at the chocolate and really take in how delicious it looks, you can finally take a small bite of your chocolate. Let it sit on your tongue and melt in your mouth. Notice the flavors from the chocolate, becoming completely absorbed in what youre experiencing right now. Continue your deep breathin g, and concentrate on the sensations in your mouth.Focus on the sensations. As you swallow, focus on how it feels going down. Notice how your mouth feels empty. Then, as you take a second bite, try to even notice how your arm feels as you raise the chocolate to your mouth, how it feels between your fingers, and then in your mouth. Again, focus on the sensations you are feeling in the present moment.Re-focus on the present.  If other thoughts come into your mind during your chocolate meditation, gently refocus your attention to the flavors and sensations associated with the chocolate. The idea is to stay in the present moment as much as you possibly can.Savor the feeling.  When youre done savoring your chocolate, revisit the feeling throughout your day, and feel more relaxed. You may choose to continue your meditation after the chocolate is gone, or simply resume your day immediately afterward. Tips for Meditating With Chocolate You dont need to consume large quantities of chocolate during this exercise. In fact, if youre doing it carefully, you wont need to consume much at all.If youre sensitive to chocolate or have issues with sugar, you can try a similar type of meditation with raisins or other savor-able food youre able to safely eat.If you meditate every day, youll find lasting benefits and perhaps even a greater resilience toward stress.

Hypocrisy. It is a lie, a contradiction, a prejudice. Like a trap for the mind one lays for themselves, many don’t realize they are ensnared, living their lives unaware of their wrongs to others and themselves. In To Kill A Mockingbird the residents of Maycomb County are thrown into new situations which reveal the depths of their hypocrisy to Scout, whose development is fueled by it. In the light of new ideas, old ones can change, along with There is hypocrisy abound in To Kill A Mockingbird. Many characters in hold on to high, â€Å"moral† beliefs while acting in the contrary. In chapter 26, Aunt Alexandra holds a house party for all the ladies in the town. Drug laws apply on state and federal levels. In federal circumstances, â€Å"convictions are from drug trafficking† and in the states, it’s for â€Å"drug possession.† The federal punishments are longer sentences and harsher punishment while the states place the arrestee is charged with misdemeanor and is put on probation, short jail term, or a fine. However, in court, if the criminal pleads guilty, they keep a clean criminal record and take a prescribed substance abuse program†¦vacated†¦and [18 months later] the accused can claim to never have been arrested or convicted of a crime. This is a law, or more of a procedure that should change. If a person has committed the act in having some relation to drug usage and adheres to it, their record should provide that information for later use in other drug cases. The main controversy between legalizing drugs is that one side believes it benefits humans bodily and materialistically, but it conflicts with the immense side effects that are dangerous to society and the human mind. I am interested in this research question because people do not realize how knowing the laws of motion can help on preventing a car accident. By having the knowledge of these laws of motion, people can understand why engineers make the cars like they do. The question and importance of the use of the seat belt can be answered. People can now understand why speed limits are used. Also, they can know why some cars accelerate faster than the others. All these questions can be answered with the three laws of motion. It can go from the use of the seat belt to the very bottom of the creation of the car. Knowing the laws of motion can help understand the effects that can occur with actions like not putting the seat belt on. There are three laws of motion described by Isaac Newton which are basically about forces and motions. Isaac Newton was a mathematician, scientist, and physician. The first law of motion is mostly recognized as â€Å"The Law of Inertia†. The second law of motion is the law that states that the force used in order to accelerate an object depends on the mass of said object.
